According to a report by Al-Jazeera on Thursday, Sept. 18, 2025, the United States has once again vetoed a United Nations Security Council resolution calling for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza, leaving it as the sole member to oppose the measure. Despite overwhelming support from other council members, Washington’s decision effectively nullified the resolution, given its status as a permanent member with veto power.
The draft resolution, which called for an urgent cessation of hostilities to allow humanitarian aid into the besieged territory, was backed by the majority of Security Council members. However, the US cast the lone dissenting vote, while other members expressed frustration at the council’s repeated failure to act amid mounting civilian casualties.
Explaining the decision, the US representative argued that the resolution was unbalanced and undermined Israel’s right to self-defense. “This text fails to condemn Hamas or recognise Israel’s right to defend itself, and it wrongly legitimises the false narratives benefiting Hamas, which have sadly found currency in this council,” the representative said.
The United States, a long-time ally of Israel, has consistently shielded it from international censure at the UN. Over the course of the Gaza conflict, Washington has used its veto power multiple times to block ceasefire proposals it views as unfavorable to Israel’s security concerns. Instead, US officials have insisted on language that explicitly condemns Hamas for its October 2023 attacks, while stressing Israel’s right to respond militarily.
Critics argue that Washington’s stance has further isolated it on the global stage, as calls for an immediate halt to the violence grow louder from international partners, humanitarian agencies, and civil society groups. Many countries have warned that the Security Council’s paralysis risks eroding its credibility and emboldening further violations of international law.
Meanwhile, the humanitarian crisis in Gaza continues to deepen. Aid agencies warn that food, medicine, and clean water are running dangerously low, with hospitals operating beyond capacity under constant bombardment.
