There has been widespread outrage following the mob killing of 16 northern travelers in Uromi, Edo State, as they were passing through on their way from Port Harcourt in Rivers State to Kano State. Reports indicated that the victims were hunters who were returning home to celebrate Sallah.

In response to the incident, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu strongly condemned the murder of the hunters. He instructed security agencies in the state to track down those responsible and ensure they are brought to justice. The president also emphasized the need for a thorough investigation to identify and prosecute all those involved in the killings.

However, while a political analyst, Mr Sumner Shagari Sambo was reacting to the ugly incident during an interview (Between 2-4 minutes) on Arise Television, he condemned the lynching of the victims but also blamed the recognized security operatives for not doing a proper search before the victims were lynched by mob, after they were stopped by vigilantes in Uromi.

He said, “One other key issue was that, we have this category of people who are said to be hunters traveling from Port Harcourt up to Edo State. Does it mean that other security agencies didn’t stop them on the way? If they had the local and dane guns, they could have asked them what they were doing with it and why they were traveling with those dane guns late at night.

Further talking, he said, “If they have had the guns for long and they have been staying over there (Rivers State) and they were going back to Kano state for the festivities, why did they need to go with the gun? If they (hunters) were residents in Rivers State, they could have dropped their guns, knowing fully well they would be back when the Muslim festivities are over.
