A human rights lawyer, Harrison Oseagwina Esq., has accused security agencies of arresting innocent people in Uromi, Edo State, while ignoring those behind the ongoing kidnappings in the area.
He made the statement during an interview on Sahara TV from 4:37 where he heavily criticized them while calling on residents to be law abiding.
Oseagwina said security officers especially the police have been moving from homes to churches arresting ordinary residents and demanding huge sums for bail. According to him, people are asked to pay between two million and five million naira. If they can’t pay, they are taken to Abuja.
“The government is not going after the kidnappers. Instead, they are going to churches and houses in Uromi, arresting innocent people and asking for millions of naira for bail. If they don’t pay, they are transferred to Abuja,” he said.
He shared the story of a pastor who was recently arrested. Oseagwina, who said he is a member of the pastor’s church, explained that the man has been detained for more than two weeks.
“They took the pastor from Benin. When he couldn’t pay the money they asked for, they moved him to Abuja, where he is still being held at the SWAT detention center,” Oseagwina added.
He called on the government to focus on arresting the real criminals, those involved in kidnappings and stop the unlawful arrests and extortion of innocent people in Uromi and other parts of Esan land.
