UK politician and Member of Parliament Ed Davey condemned the United States for blocking a draft resolution at the United Nations Security Council that called for an immediate and permanent ceasefire in Gaza.
Davey responded on X (formerly Twitter), stating, “Someone needs to explain to Donald Trump that blocking peace is no way to win a Nobel Peace Prize.”
The draft resolution, supported by 14 Security Council members, demanded an unconditional and permanent ceasefire in Gaza as well as the immediate release of all hostages held by Hamas and other militant groups.
However, the United States used its veto power to reject the resolution, becoming the sole country to oppose the measure.
The resolution aimed to address the worsening humanitarian crisis in Gaza by calling for a halt to violence and ensuring the safe and dignified release of hostages.
The majority of council members voted in favor, with no abstentions.
Despite this strong global consensus, the US veto blocked the resolution from becoming binding.
Davey’s remarks highlight growing international frustration over the US role in halting diplomatic efforts for peace, especially amid rising casualties and suffering in the region.
Critics argue that the veto undermines chances for de-escalation and further diminishes hopes for humanitarian relief.
