Retired Major-General John Enenche has shed new light on the growing challenges facing security agencies in tackling kidnapping across the country, revealing how abductors now use their victims as human shields to evade confrontation.

Enenche made the revelation during an interview from 4:57 on Channels Television while narrating a recent incident involving 15 abducted persons moved from Enugu State into Benue State.

According to him, the incident occurred on Wednesday last week when armed men invaded Udenu Local Government Area of Enugu State and abducted 15 residents. He explained that the victims were taken deep into a forest in Orokam, Ogbadibo Local Government Area of Benue State, his hometown.

“On Wednesday last week, 15 of them were kidnapped from Udenu local government in Enugu and taken to a forest in Orokam in the village where I come from. And when the local vigilantes, and the army, the police, the two DPOs, they went together to the forest, to the enclave where they kept them, they used them as human shields,” he said.

Enenche noted that when a joint team of local vigilantes, soldiers, police officers and two Divisional Police Officers (DPOs) mobilised to the scene, the kidnappers strategically positioned the abductees around themselves, making it impossible for security personnel to open fire without risking civilian casualties.
