In a recent statement via his official X account, human rights lawyer, Inibehe Effiong, has criticised Nigerians who accused the United States of trying to divide the country by placing it on a religious freedom watchlist.

Effiong said Nigerians should stop blaming America for the country’s problems, stressing that the real issue lies with political leaders who have benefited from insecurity and division for years.

“America wants to profit from insecurity in Nigeria, right Are politicians and political office holders not profiting from the insecurity in Nigeria?

America wants to divide Nigerians along religious lines, right?

Hasn’t that been the whole agenda of the APC from Buhari to Tinubu?

If you remove ethnic and religious politics from the equation, what will politicians in Nigeria across party lines, especially those in the APC, campaign on?

A government that openly associates with terrorists and refuses to bring murderers to justice has no moral authority to accuse a foreign power of interference.

America is not our saviour, but the Nigerian is the problem,” he wrote.

In his post, Effiong said it was hypocritical for Nigerians to say America wants to profit from insecurity, when local politicians are already exploiting the same crisis for personal gain.

He questioned the logic behind accusing the U.S. of trying to divide the country along religious lines, pointing out that Nigerian leaders themselves have long used religion and ethnicity to win elections and hold onto power.

According to him, the All Progressives Congress (APC) government from former President Muhammadu Buhari to President Bola Tinubu has promoted policies that deepen religious and ethnic divisions.

He said if those factors were removed from politics, many politicians would have nothing left to campaign with.

Effiong argued that a government that has failed to punish terrorists and refuses to bring killers to justice lacks the moral authority to accuse another country of interference.

He said such a government has no credibility to talk about sovereignty when it cannot protect its own citizens.

The lawyer stated that while America may not be Nigeria’s saviour, it was wrong to pretend that the country’s deep problems were caused by outsiders. View, More,
