Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has urged Nigerians to unite in defense of the country’s sovereignty and vital national assets amid growing international tensions.

His comments come in response to remarks by U.S. President Donald Trump, who recently suggested the possibility of military action against Nigeria over alleged cases of religious persecution.

According to a report by Vanguard on Tuesday, November 4, 2025, Governor Sanwo-Olu made the call through his Deputy, Dr. Obafemi Hamzat, during the launch of the All Progressives Congress (APC) South-West “Train-the-Trainer” e-registration program held at the Lagos House, Marina.

He emphasized that Nigerians must remain vigilant and patriotic in safeguarding the country’s interests, especially its critical infrastructure and investments that symbolize national progress and resilience.

Speaking to party members and guests at the event, Governor Sanwo-Olu underscored the need to protect Nigeria’s sovereignty from both internal and external threats.

He described recent international statements targeting the nation’s governance and human rights record as attempts to undermine Nigeria’s stability.

The governor stressed that Nigerians must respond not with fear or division but with a renewed sense of unity and commitment to nation-building.

“Our sovereignty and our strategic investments must be protected at all costs,” Sanwo-Olu said through his deputy. “The Dangote 650,000-barrel-per-day refining capacity must be protected. The billions of dollars expended is not a joke.”

He described the Dangote Refinery as a landmark project that reflects Nigeria’s determination to become self-reliant in energy production and an economic powerhouse in Africa.

According to the governor, the project represents not just a private investment but a national achievement that must be preserved from any form of threat whether economic, political, or external interference.

The governor’s remarks come at a time of heightened political and diplomatic unease following Trump’s statement about possible U.S. sanctions or military intervention in response to alleged religious violence in Nigeria.

The comment has stirred widespread criticism across the country, with government officials and political leaders emphasizing Nigeria’s independence and capacity to resolve its internal challenges without foreign interference.

Sanwo-Olu’s speech also reflected broader themes of governance reform and accountability.

He highlighted the need for data-driven decision-making and the use of technology to improve efficiency within both government and political party structures.

According to him, modern governance demands measurable outcomes and a transparent system that reflects the will and needs of the people.

“Technology and accountability are essential tools for building a responsive and transparent political system,” the governor said. “In this era, data should guide every aspect of governance and political organization. We must continue to strengthen the structures of our party and our government to ensure that we deliver tangible results to the people.”

The governor urged Nigerians to resist any attempt to sow discord along political, religious, or ethnic lines, stressing that unity remains the country’s greatest strength.
