According to a report by Channels TV, on Sunday November 30, 2025, Nigeria was thrust into a diplomatic crisis on Friday, October 31, 2025, after United States President Donald Trump officially redesignated Nigeria as a Country of Particular Concern (CPC).
The severe designation, which signals grave concern over religious freedom, was explicitly made over allegations of a governmentated killing of Christians.
The action places Nigeria among a list of nations deemed by the U.S. State Department to have engaged in or tolerated systematic, ongoing, and egregious violations of religious freedom.
The Serving Overseer of the Citadel Global Community Church, Pastor Tunde Bakare, addressed the designation, expressing his concern over the development and sharing his initial reaction to the acronym.
“Since Friday, October 31, 2025, our country has found itself in the center of an unfolding storm. It began with the announcement by President Donald Trump of the United States, redesating Nigeria as a country of particular concern,” Pastor Bakare stated.
He then recounted a moment of political confusion, referencing the now-defunct political party that merged to form the current ruling party:
“When I first heard CPC, I thought it was a party that we killed to form APC. You know it was CPC.”
Pastor Bakare concluded by reiterating the core reason behind the U.S. government’s decision, underscoring the severity of the allegations:
“Nigeria became a country of particular concern over allegations of a governmentated killing of Christians.” View, More,
