Public Affairs Analyst, Laolu Akande has shed new light on the scale of protective measures granted to families of top government officials in advanced democracies, drawing a striking comparison during an interview from 1:9 on Channels Television.
Speaking on the need for clearer, more accountable security arrangements in Nigeria, Akande referenced the United States Secret Service as an example of a system built on professionalism and statutory duty.
Akande revealed that even the youngest members of the U.S. First Family are assigned extensive security details as part of standard procedure, not political privilege. He noted that the deployment is guided strictly by law, ensuring that personal protection does not become a subject of national controversy.
“I was just reading up on this and it turned out that Baron Trump, the son of the US president who is schooling in New York, has as much as 30 Secret Service people around him in his school,” he said, stressing how meticulously the United States approaches presidential protection.
According to Akande, such arrangements demonstrate how advanced democracies separate the security of public officials from partisan debates, maintaining structures that operate with consistency and transparency. He argued that this is a lesson Nigeria should take seriously as the country continues to debate the cost, scope, and legitimacy of security details assigned to public office holders.
