In a revealing interview with conservative podcaster Patrick Bet-David, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu shared a striking analogy he used to explain Israel’s approach to confronting Iran’s regional influence and threats.

Netanyahu recounted a conversation with former U.S. President Donald Trump, who was curious about how a small country like Israel manages to take on the much larger and more powerful Iran.

“President Trump asked me, ‘How do you guys do this? I mean, you’re such a small country. You know, we’re the size of New Jersey, bigger than Rhode Island, but that’s it.

We’re slightly smaller than New Jersey, and we take on this enormous empire (Iran) with all its proxies, this anti-American empire that threatens to kill the president and chant death to America,’” Netanyahu said.

In response, Netanyahu described Israel metaphorically as a badger — a relatively small but fierce animal known for its tenacity and sharp defense mechanisms.

“You know, you’re like an enormous lion, almost like a prehistoric saber-tooth tiger. You’re enormous. We’re not, but we are, you know, we’re the badger, you know, this little animal,” he explained.

He illustrated how despite its size, the badger can defend itself fiercely and even drive away much larger predators.

“You see a badger being attacked by a tiger or lioness, it sort of turns around; it has very sharp teeth and it knows how to go for the weakness points, you know, to the points of vulnerability of the enemy… You see these things in the wild, this tiny creature fighting off a lion. And the lion runs away.”

Netanyahu concluded that Israel’s resilience comes from its history and perseverance. “Israel is the badger of the international scene. It has the fortitude, the will to fight our enemies because of our history. Because for so long, we were—we didn’t have a state, we didn’t have an army.”
