Public Affairs analyst, Prof. Simeon Nnah, has highlighted how emerging political strategies could shape voter behavior ahead of the 2027 general elections.
In a recent interview from 30:05 with News Central TV, he pointed to a development in Owerri, where supporters of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu reportedly handed out relief items to residents.
According to him, “Tinubu’s supporters moved in Owerri to distribute palliatives, and when the food packs were opened, they were filled with Indomie.” Prof. Nnah explained that such actions mirror a familiar pattern in Nigeria’s political space, especially as elections draw near.
He noted that these supporters, often called the “city boys,” appear to be reviving tactics used in previous election cycles.
“The distribution of palliatives is not merely humanitarian but also a calculated political move aimed at reconnecting with grassroots voters and shaping public perception ahead of the polls,” he said.
While acknowledging the effectiveness of these tactics, Prof. Nnah stressed that opposition parties need to rethink their strategies.
He argued that relying on conventional methods may not be enough to challenge an incumbent government with established structures and influence.
He advised the opposition to adopt innovative strategies and focus on highlighting the shortcomings of the current administration.
