Aliyu Audu has resigned from his role as Senior Special Assistant on Public Affairs to President Bola Tinubu, citing a decline in democratic values as the reason behind his decision as reported by The Daily Post.

In a resignation letter dated 8 June 2025 and submitted through the Chief of Staff, Femi Gbajabiamila, Audu stated:

“I write to formally tender my resignation as Senior Special Assistant to the President on Public Affairs, effective immediately.”

In a separate statement addressed to the public, Audu clarified that his resignation was not an act of rebellion, but one guided by conscience and principle. He expressed concern over what he described as a growing attempt by the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) to stifle political opposition.

“While I am not a supporter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), I refuse to be complicit in turning Nigeria into a one-party state,” he said.

“This would be a betrayal of both divine favour and the essence of democracy.”

Audu stressed that true democracy depends on healthy political competition and the freedom to hold differing views. Drawing a comparison to past administrations, he warned against repeating the mistakes of the past by suppressing dissent.

“Crushing opposition because one holds power is not leadership; it is a dangerous step backwards. Under Obasanjo in 2003, we opposed such tendencies. To follow the same path today would be politically reckless and spiritually misguided.”

He further stated that suppressing alternative views contradicts both democratic ideals and divine principles that uphold freedom and diversity.

“If God allows belief and disbelief to exist side by side, why should we fear ideological differences? Our strength must lie in our ability to compete with ideas, not in forcing conformity.”

Despite his resignation, Audu reaffirmed his support for the current administration, particularly on its economic reforms, but criticised the political alignment between President Tinubu and Minister Nyesom Wike.

“While I remain committed to our government’s economic strides, I disagree with its political direction, especially the unholy alliance between PBAT and Wike. It undermines the progressive ideals I stand for.”

He ended his statement on a light-hearted note, acknowledging the political exchanges that may follow his decision: “That doesn’t mean the gbas gbos will end. We’re still here for the debates. Over to you, Agbadorians.”
