Human rights activist and politician Omoyele Sowore has insisted that Nigeria’s Department of State Services (DSS) cannot take legal action against him over his repeated description of President Bola Tinubu as a “criminal.” Sowore stated that only Tinubu himself can challenge the remark, stressing that the matter is personal and cannot be prosecuted by third parties.
Speaking in a clip shared by TV Platinum on September 25, 2025 from 00:54, the Sahara Reporters founder pointed out that despite the controversy around his comments, President Tinubu has never personally raised an objection. He noted that Tinubu continues to travel abroad and run his businesses, including media outlets, without filing any complaint or lawsuit.
Sowore told journalists that those calling for his prosecution are misplacing their efforts. He explained that the DSS has no constitutional authority to sue on behalf of the president, and that the law requires only the aggrieved individual to take action. He added that immunity is no excuse for avoiding a courtroom appearance if the president truly feels defamed.
“He has never complained that I called him a criminal,” Sowore said. “The man who was called a criminal has not complained. The rest of you are saying, ‘Why did you say so?’ Let the man come out, and that’s what I told the DSS as well. You have no right to take me to court on his behalf. He is here in Nigeria. Let us go to court. It’s personal. And if you come to court on his behalf, don’t come and tell me that he cannot enter the dock, that he has immunity—because he’s my number one witness.” See, More, Here>>>>
