According to the report from Voice TV, President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio, has revealed that the recent defection of senators from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC) was driven by patriotism and confidence in President Bola Tinubu’s leadership.

Speaking at the Presidential Villa in Abuja after leading the new defectors to meet with President Tinubu, Akpabio praised the President’s economic and revenue policies, saying they were beginning to yield visible results for the country.

According to Akpabio, “But as a result of the, uh, what I may call Mr. President’s policies that have tended to turn things around economically and particularly in terms of revenue generation for the nation, they found it expedient to come in and join him to build Nigeria. This is nothing but patriotism.”

He further emphasized that the senators’ decision was not about political advantage but national interest.

“They are not interested in which political party is in power. They’re interested in who can run Nigeria, who can improve Nigeria, who can put food on the tables of Nigerians,” Akpabio said.

The Senate President commended President Tinubu for fostering an environment that inspires confidence across party lines, noting that more lawmakers were likely to join the ruling party in the coming weeks.

The meeting, held at the Aso Rock Presidential Villa, comes amid a growing wave of defections in the National Assembly, signaling shifting political alliances ahead of future elections.
