Senate President Godswill Akpabio has formally endorsed President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for a second term in office, calling for his re-election as the sole presidential candidate in the 2027 general elections. Akpabio made the declaration during the APC National Summit held in Abuja under the theme “Renewed Hope Agenda: The Journey So Far.”
In a dramatic address televised by TVC News and widely circulated on social media, Akpabio praised Tinubu’s leadership, citing economic stabilization efforts and backing from international financial institutions like the IMF. He declared:
“I move… that not only will President Bola Ahmed Tinubu be a sole candidate for the presidency in 2027, but he will also be a sole candidate for the whole Nigerian population… because all other political parties have been torn into shreds. I went to my state, and I saw the umbrella at the PDP, It has over 100 holes And so, very soon you will hear.”
Akpabio’s remarks were met with vocal support from APC lawmakers, with the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Tajudeen Abbas, formally seconding the motion on behalf of all federal and state legislators. The session concluded with a unanimous voice vote endorsing Tinubu.
The declaration signals a consolidation of support within the APC for Tinubu amid a volatile economic climate and mounting opposition efforts. The Senate President’s reference to the “collapse” of opposition in the South-South region aligns with recent claims by APC leaders of growing grassroots support in historically non-APC strongholds.
This early endorsement also comes on the heels of news that opposition figures Atiku Abubakar, Peter Obi, and Nasir El-Rufai are forming a coalition under the African Democratic Congress (ADC) to mount a unified challenge in 2027 — a development that may have influenced the timing and forcefulness of Akpabio’s motion.
Analysts suggest the endorsement reflects the APC’s strategic move to project unity, quell internal divisions, and frame Tinubu as the only viable national leader amid economic reforms and political realignments.
