The President of the Nigeria Labour Congress, Comrade Joe Ajaero has alleged that despite the urgency of a new minimum wage and the pressure from Labour, the President had suggested that another strike would give him more time to read and relax.
He however stated that this response did not deter Labour from advocating for the workers right. He explained that the current phase involves consulting with the President, whom he regards to as the Father of the Nation. He expressed confidence that after concluding consultations with the President, there would be no additional hurdles to overcome. He anticipated that the new minimum wage would soon be enforced.
He said in an interview with Channels TV, ”The last minimum wage expired by April 18th and the government started owing by April. So they have owed April, May and June. Now, we don’t have the luxury of time and we have told Mr. President. Although he said if we go on strike, he will have time to read his papers and do other things.
We understand the plight of our workers but we equally have to be patient with what we are doing now to make sure that we pass through the whole process. We believe that this is the last level where we are and this is the level of consulting with Mr President as the father of the Nation. If we finish this level, I have no doubt that there is no other further steps to make, the new minimum wage will be put into action. By the time we finish meeting next week, we will take the decision that was made back to our organs and any decision being made is what we are going to follow up.”….Seë_Morë
