President Bola Tinubu has been praised by the World Trade Organisation (WTO) for his administration’s efforts to stabilise Nigeria’s economy. The commendation came from WTO Director-General Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala during her visit to the Presidential Villa in Abuja, according to report by The Nation on Thursday August 15, 2025.
Dr. Okonjo-Iweala acknowledged that the government’s recent economic reforms have helped bring stability to the country. She noted that stabilising the economy is a key step before any real progress can be made.
However, she also pointed out that the next priority should be boosting economic growth and helping citizens who are facing financial pressure due to the reforms.
She encouraged the government to introduce support systems that can ease the burden on Nigerians affected by rising costs.
She stated, “So, he has to be given the credit for the stability of the economy. The reforms have been in the right direction. What is needed next is growth. We now need to grow the economy, and we need to put in social safety nets so that people who are feeling the pinch of the reforms can also have some support to weather the hardship.”
Meanwhile, Finance Minister and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Wale Edun, stated that Nigeria is open for global business. He said recent improvements in economic indicators show that the country is becoming more stable and attractive to investors.
