Chief Chekwas Okorie, a founding member of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), has raised concerns about what he perceives as unequal ministerial representation across Nigeria’s geopolitical zones under President Bola Tinubu’s administration.

Speaking during an interview with Signature TV, Okorie drew comparisons between the current president and his predecessor, suggesting that nepotism has intensified under the present leadership.

“You can go a little further and say look at today because I remember we were complaining that the late president Buhari was nepotistic, this and that, but today I said that president Tinubu has proved that president Buhari was a learner in nepotism,” Okorie stated during the television appearance.

The APGA chieftain specifically highlighted the disparity in ministerial allocations between the Southwest and Southeast regions, pointing to what he considers an imbalanced distribution of cabinet positions.

“Ogun state alone has five very powerful ministers, Ogun state. The whole of the southeast has five. In other words, the whole of the five states in the southeast in terms of ministerial allocation is equal to one state in the southwest,” he explained.

Okorie further elaborated on the nature of appointments given to the Southeast region, noting a distinction between substantive ministerial positions and junior roles.

“In that our five, only two are substantive ministers – minister of works and minister of science and technology. The other three who are also our daughters, women, are all ministers of state,” he said.

The political figure also commented on the gender composition of ministerial appointments from the Southeast, making observations about the current administration’s approach to female representation in cabinet positions.

“In Nigeria of today, the southeast has the highest number of women ministers. I mean women are capable, they are also very capable no doubt about that, but you can see the mindset of those who are appointing these things,” Okorie remarked.
