On Thursday, July 10, 2025, Lauretta Onochie, the former chairman of the Niger Delta Development Commission, NDDC board, weighed in on the debate over who made Muhammadu Buhari president in 2015.
Reacting on her official X handle, Onochie dismissed claims that Bola Tinubu was the key to Buhari’s victory. She said the “lie” that Tinubu made Buhari president had “expired.”
“Every lie has an expiry date. Yesterday, the lie that @officialABAT made @MBuhari president expired,” she wrote.
Her comment came after Boss Mustapha, former Secretary to the Government of the Federation, challenged the popular narrative.
Speaking at the launch of Garba Shehu’s book “According to the President”, Mustapha said Buhari already had a strong voter base before the APC merger.
“Buhari had about 12.2 million votes on his own. The merger only brought an additional 3.2 million votes,” Mustapha explained.
He argued that Buhari’s personal popularity, not the APC coalition, delivered the victory.
Onochie backed this view, adding, “Tinubu did not even support Buhari’s emergence as candidate in 2014. Fact.”
The comments have reignited discussions over who truly shaped Buhari’s path to Aso Rock in 2015.
