Umar Sani, a chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), says Nigerians only pay attention to politics when they are dissatisfied, believing this is why the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) changed its strategy in 2023, during an interview with THE SUN.

According to Sani, the APC introduced a Muslim-Muslim ticket because they knew most votes come from the North.

He said the region is influenced by religious sentiment, which helped President Bola Tinubu secure 5.6 million votes from the North out of his total eight million, however, Sani argues that the situation has changed.

He said no one is happy with the current economic hardship, and religious or political sentiments will no longer be enough to win elections, believing the North is now looking for an alternative.

Sani explained that Northerners are not concerned about which party the candidate comes from.

Instead, they want a leader who can improve the economy and bring real change.

He stated that Nigerians would support anyone who has the capacity to deliver, regardless of party affiliation.

With the 2027 election approaching, Sani predicts that voter behavior will shift.

He believes economic conditions will play a key role in deciding the next president.

“Out of the eight million votes that Tinubu got, 5.6 million came from the North, which tells you how sentimental the North is. However, nobody is enjoying the current economic situation, and you can’t use any sentiment to try to persuade the North to follow. The North is looking for an alternative, and they don’t mind which party the person comes from,” he said.
