Governor Charles Soludo of Anambra State has extended an olive branch to armed youth groups operating in the state’s forests, promising rehabilitation for those who surrender.
In a broadcast by Channels TV, Soludo emphasized that criminal behavior contradicts Anambra’s values. “Our reform program is on course. Those in the bushes, those who want to make money quick, the criminals who no longer value hard work – that’s not who we are,” he stated.
The governor stressed that criminals represent a tiny fraction of Anambra’s youth population. “The 0.01% criminals who are out there in the bush, occasionally they will sneak out of the bushes and cause one mayhem or the other,” he said, adding that “That 0.01% can never define the rest of the 99.99% of Anambra youths.”
Highlighting the positive attributes of most young people in the state, Gov Soludo noted, “A large percentage of our youth are hardworking, they are honest people, and they want to take their destiny in their own hands. They want to have a future for themselves; they only need our push.”
The governor concluded with a direct appeal to armed groups: “Those of you in the bush who are carrying guns, come out from there and we will help to rehabilitate.”
This appeal gains particular urgency following a series of high-profile attacks on political figures in Anambra, most notably the abduction and murder of Hon. Justice Azuka, who represented Onitsha North. The lawmaker’s decomposed body was discovered on the Second Niger Bridge weeks after his kidnapping, underscoring the severe security challenges facing the state.
