Nigerian filmmaker Obi Emelonye, who made a movie about former military leader Gen. Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida (IBB), has revealed details of a conversation he had with IBB regarding the execution of Gen. Mamman Vatsa.
Speaking in an exclusive interview with Jideonwo Chude on his popular show #WithChude, Emelonye disclosed that when he asked Babangida about Vatsa’s case, the former military leader explained that they had been childhood friends and had come a long way together.
Emelonye said that in military politics, knowing about a coup but failing to report it is considered just as serious as planning it. He said there was a coup plot against Babangida, and the plan was to kill him with his family and also destroy Dodan Barracks completely using fighter jets. He said that Vatsa knew of the plot but did not inform Babangida.
Speaking further, Emelonye said that Babangida told him that ordering Vatsa’s execution was the hardest decision he had ever made as a soldier.
In Emelonye’s words: “So there was a coup planned against IBB where they didn’t just want to come and kill him in Dodan barracks, they wanted to level Dodan barracks with fighter jets with his family involved. Mamman Vatsa caught wind of it but he didn’t tell his friend”
