Daniel Ohikhena, the teenager who stunned the nation in 2013 after sneaking into the wheel compartment of an aircraft at Benin Airport, has opened up about his emotional breakdown following his arrest.
Speaking on The Lucky Udu Experience Podcast, Daniel shared how fear gripped him when he was detained and how it led him to pray like never before.
Shortly after the plane landed in Lagos and security officials discovered him, Daniel was immediately arrested and taken into custody at the airport.
“They took me to one small cell in the airport there,” he recounted. “That was then that I knew I can pray,I can kabash. I was praying like a prayer warrior.”
The then-13-year-old had taken the drastic step believing the flight was heading to America, hoping to escape the poverty he experienced growing up with his single mother. But once reality set in, he was overcome with fear and regret.
“I was praying for God to help, that I’m sorry I didn’t know what happened. I didn’t know what got into me,” Daniel added, reflecting on the deep panic he felt in that moment.
Daniel’s story, which has resurfaced over a decade later, continues to resonate with many Nigerians. His experience shines a light not only on the vulnerabilities of youth but also on the desperation that can drive a child to risk everything for a perceived better future.
Now older and able to share his journey in his own words, Daniel’s testimony offers a sobering look into the emotional and spiritual turmoil that followed his daring but misguided escape attempt. His story is a powerful reminder of how hope, fear and faith can collide in the most unexpected places.
