Former Niger Delta militant leader and outspoken political commentator, Alhaji Mujahid Asari Dokubo, has strongly criticized ongoing calls for the creation of new states in Nigeria, labeling the idea as “rubbish” and constitutionally unrealistic.
In a Facebook Live broadcast shared on his official page, Dokubo dismissed the clamour for additional states, arguing that the agitators lack the political strength and constitutional understanding to achieve such goals.
“My brother Kelly, they’re not going to create any state. Leave these jokers,” he said. “They think they can jump constitutional hurdles and create states. Do they think they’ll get two-thirds of the House of Assembly in the 36 states? Just forget it. It’s rubbish. It won’t happen.”
Dokubo emphasized that the constitutional process for state creation—outlined in the 1999 Constitution—requires a two-thirds majority in both the National Assembly and at least 24 out of the 36 state Houses of Assembly, a feat he believes is practically impossible under current political conditions.
He accused politicians of misleading the public for political gain, stating, “People are being deceived. These politicians know the truth but keep selling lies. There will be no state creation—it’s all noise.”
His comments have sparked heated reactions across social media, with some supporting his stance on constitutional reality, while others criticized him for dismissing genuine calls for restructuring and regional inclusion.
