Senator Elisha Abbo has made a revelation about alleged monetary inducements offered to senators ahead of the 10th Senate Presidency election at Transcorp Hilton hotel.
Speaking in an interview on Arise TV from 3:30, Abbo claimed that large sums of money were being distributed to lawmakers in an attempt to secure their support.
“One day they told me there was a meeting on the 4th floor in Transcorp Hilton, and they were dashing out $10,000. I told them I will not collect the money,” Abbo stated.
The Adamawa North Senator, who was a key supporter of Senator Abdulaziz Yari in the Senate leadership race said he refused to accept the money reinforcing his stance against being influenced by financial incentives.
His statement adds to growing concerns about the role of money in Nigerian politics particularly during high-stakes elections such as the contest for the Senate Presidency.
While Abbo did not specify who was behind the alleged cash distribution, his remarks suggest that financial inducements were a significant factor in the lobbying process.
The election saw intense political maneuvering with eventual winner, Senator Godswill Akpabio securing the position against Yari. Abbo had earlier disclosed that Akpabio personally visited him at 2:00 a.m. to solicit his support and that even vice president reached out to convince him.
Abbo’s latest claim raises fresh questions about the transparency and integrity of leadership selection within Nigeria’s legislative arm.
It remains to be seen if the Senate will take any steps to investigate these allegations or if they will fade into the background like similar past claims in Nigerian politics.
