In a report by Daily Trust on Thursday, 31st July, 2025, Imrana Shafi’u, a resident of Anguwar Dan Marka in Katsina State, recounted a horrifying encounter that nearly cost him his life. During one of the many attacks by armed bandits on his village, he was shot twice in the leg and left for dead. The memory of that day remains etched in his mind as one of the darkest moments of his life.
According to Imrana, the attack came suddenly and without warning. He and a group of his close friends had gathered in the area when the gunmen stormed the village, firing their weapons without restraint. Chaos broke out as residents ran in every direction, trying to escape the onslaught. Unfortunately, Imrana and his friends were caught in the gunfire.
While he managed to survive, the cost was heavy. Imrana was hit by two bullets in his legs and collapsed to the ground, unable to move. He lay motionless, pretending to be dead as the attackers moved around, ensuring no one was left alive. His ability to remain calm and still may have been what ultimately saved his life.
Tragically, all of Imrana’s friends were killed during the attack. As he lay beside their lifeless bodies, he could do nothing but wait for the gunmen to leave. The emotional pain of losing people so close to him, combined with the physical agony of his injuries, was overwhelming. It was only after the assailants had departed that he was rescued by other villagers.
Imrana now lives with permanent injuries that have drastically changed his life. He walks with the help of crutches and requires regular medical attention. The incident not only robbed him of his mobility but also of the sense of safety he once had in his own community. Every step he takes reminds him of the brutal reality faced by those living in northern Nigeria’s conflict zones.
“They (bandits) killed all my friends that day. I pretended to be dead until they left. I now walk with crutches,” he said.
