Yusuf Gagdi, a member of the House of Representatives from Plateau State, recently spoke on Politics Today with Channels Television about the ongoing violence in Plateau from 16.01. He described the situation as one driven by criminality, not religion or ethnicity.
Gagdi shared a recent event from the Garga area in Kanam Local Government, where he represents. He explained that bandits had attacked his community, kidnapping people. In response, local vigilantes—community members who help keep their neighborhoods safe—bravely tracked the kidnappers into the forest. There, they found the bandits while they were asleep and killed four of them.
“They kidnap some people, and the local Vigilantes were brave enough to go to the forest and discover where the bandits were sleeping and killed four of them,” he said.
Unfortunately, this action led to a larger attack. The bandits called for help from other criminal groups, who then attacked five to seven different communities in Kanam. These attacks resulted in the deaths of over 147 people.
Gagdi stressed that Kanam is especially at risk because of its location. It borders both Taraba State and the Yankari area, and there are no security checkpoints between these places and Kanam. This makes it easy for bandits to move in and out freely.
He warned that if the government does not act quickly, the violence will spread to other parts of Plateau State. Gagdi called for stronger security measures and more support for communities trying to protect themselves.
This is not about religion; it’s about criminality, Gagdi said, urging leaders to treat the situation with urgency and seriousness.
