Veteran actor and politician Kenneth Okonkwo has criticized the recent wave of defections to the All Progressives Congress claiming that many politicians are switching parties out of fear and a belief that the ruling party will manipulate the 2027 general elections.
Speaking during an interview on Channels Television from 1:46, Okonkwo expressed concern over the state of democracy in Nigeria. He stated that the defections were not based on ideological alignment or a commitment to national development, but rather on a belief that the APC would “write the results” of future elections.
“The whole idea of joining another political party, and precisely the ruling party, is simply because of the belief that in 2027 they are going to write the results of the election. Nothing else,” Okonkwo said. “I mean, it’s an absurdity that people will see a sinking house and they are running into it for shelter.”
Okonkwo, a former spokesman for the Labour Party presidential campaign, described the APC as a “sinking ship” and warned that those defecting might find themselves stranded politically. He called on Nigerians to resist the normalization of electoral malpractice and to demand greater accountability from political leaders.
The comment comes at a time of heightened political activity, with several high-profile defections ahead of the 2027 elections. Critics have accused the ruling party of using its influence to consolidate power rather than address critical issues facing the country.
As preparations for the next electoral cycle begin, Okonkwo’s remarks have further ignited debate about the integrity of Nigeria’s democratic processes and the motivations behind political realignments.
Observers say the next few years will be crucial in determining whether Nigeria can strengthen its democracy or slide further into political cynicism.
