As political realignments intensify ahead of the 2027 general election, pressure has been mounting on the opposition coalition movement to resolve outstanding issues related to individual ambitions and to establish a unified platform capable of challenging President Bola Tinubu’s bid for a second term.
According to Leadership, Chief Martin Onovo, a former presidential candidate, highlighted this challenge by stating that it would be extremely difficult for any single opposition party to defeat President Tinubu in the 2027 election. He emphasized that only a strong and united alliance of opposition parties would have the capacity to successfully challenge the All Progressives Congress (APC) government led by President Tinubu.
Meanwhile, the national chairman of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Chief Okey Ralph Nwosu, told LEADERSHIP that the principal figures involved in the coalition movement had already reached an agreement to support whoever emerges as the coalition’s candidate.
Responding to concerns that personal ambitions might hinder the success of the coalition, Chief Nwosu stated that all the key actors had committed to setting aside their individual aspirations and to backing any candidate who secures the ticket through a transparent and credible process.
“They all have agreed and signed up to work together and support any one candidate within the coalition that emerges as candidate. The important thing is to make the process transparent,” Nwosu told LEADERSHIP.
Although they are yet to declare their ambitions, Atiku, Obi and Amaechi are speculated to be interested in flying the coalition’s flag.
