Nasir El-Rufai has unapologetically confirmed what many in political circles had only whispered: the opposition is mobilising to remove President Bola Tinubu in 2027, and El-Rufai is right at the center of it.
While addressing participants at the Arewa Tech Fest in Katsina on Wednesday, El-Rufai revealed that his lateness was due to a coalition strategy meeting held the previous night—a meeting he described as crucial to the effort to “send Tinubu back to Lagos.”
“They had to come without me because yesterday at 8pm there was a very important meeting of the coalition we’re putting together to ensure that President Tinubu goes back to Lagos,” he stated, drawing stunned reactions from the audience.
El-Rufai’s bluntness about his anti-Tinubu political activities marks a dramatic shift from previous ambiguity. The ex-governor appears to now be openly spearheading the opposition, confirming reports that he left the ruling APC and joined the Social Democratic Party earlier this year.
The event, which brought together startups, investors, and policymakers, quickly transformed from a tech forum into a stage for political drama. El-Rufai did not name who else attended the coalition meeting but hinted that more public declarations would soon follow.
“This isn’t about just one party. It’s about forming a coalition that can fix Nigeria,” he added.
