Senator Abdul Ningi of Bauchi State has suggested that the perpetrators of the devastating Yelewata community attack could not have escaped without assistance from compromised state security personnels.

The senator raised serious questions about the mysterious disappearance of attackers following the massacre that claimed approximately 200 lives in Benue State. Speaking during Symfoni TV coverage, Ningi challenged the plausibility of such a large-scale operation going untraced. “Now, we sit down here, and I believe we do have committees. We do have national security. We have army, we do have airports, we have police, we have this and that,” Ningi stated. “Mr. President, we cannot sit here and allow the President to do his job; we must do ours.”

The senator emphasized the National Assembly’s responsibility to investigate the tragedy thoroughly, arguing that lawmakers must demand accountability from security agencies. “Our job, after what happened in Yelewat, was to have our people on the ground asking questions, because questions have been raised, and more questions have been raised. There is no way 200 people will just perish, and then the perpetrator will just vanish. Are they angels? Something is wrong. Something is definitely wrong,” he declared.

The Bauchi senator called for comprehensive investigation regardless of the attackers’ identity or origin. “Whether they are Nigerians, whether they are Cameroonians, whether they are herders, whether they are Tiv militias, we must get to the root of the matter,” Ningi insisted.

Beyond the Yelewata incident, the senator highlighted broader security challenges facing Nigerian military personnel, citing daily casualties among service members. “Our servicemen have been killed left, right, and center. We must ask questions, and this chamber must be able to get more people to these services,” he said.

Senator Abdul Ningi disclosed troubling statistics about ongoing military losses, revealing that at least 20 soldiers were killed recently. The Senator emphasized that such casualties have become a daily occurrence, highlighting the continuous toll on Nigeria’s armed forces.

He raised concerns about the welfare of military families affected by these losses, questioning who takes responsibility for supporting the families of fallen soldiers and ensuring their needs are addressed after their loved ones make the ultimate sacrifice in service to the nation.

Senator Ningi contended that the legislative body should focus primarily on addressing security challenges rather than approving various contracts and spending initiatives across different sectors.
