According to a report by Punch, the Coalition of United Political Parties (CUPP) has reacted to recent claims made by Kenneth Okonkwo against Peter Obi, describing the allegations as part of a deeper, strategic attempt to malign the former Labour Party presidential candidate.

Okonkwo, a veteran actor and Obi’s former campaign spokesperson, alleged in a podcast interview that he was betrayed by Obi despite his dedication to the 2023 presidential campaign. He accused the former Anambra governor of ignoring his advice to distance himself from the Julius Abure-led Labour Party faction, which he described as undemocratic.

The actor said, “If there is anybody that betrayed the other, I can say it emphatically that Peter Obi betrayed me.”

His comments drew swift backlash from staunch Obi supporters and key political allies, who dismissed the accusations as politically charged and misleading. Among the most direct responses came from the National Secretary of the CUPP, Peter Ameh, who suggested that Okonkwo’s attacks were far from spontaneous.

“You have addressed the issue thoroughly, as anticipated. These scathing attacks are not merely coincidental. There is more to them than appears on the surface,” he posted.

The Obidients, a grassroots movement backing Obi, also pushed back forcefully. Nana Sani Kazaure, a former spokesperson for the Obi-Datti campaign, accused Okonkwo of inconsistency and drama-seeking. She questioned the basis of his betrayal narrative and urged him to stop projecting his political frustrations.

Echoing her sentiment, Yunusa Tanko, National Coordinator of the Obidients Movement Worldwide, said Okonkwo’s remarks were distortions intended to distract from the movement’s goal. “Obi is coming. No distractions. No conspiracy. No misrepresentation can stop the moving train. A new Nigeria is possible,” he said.

As Okonkwo continues to defend his position, CUPP and Obi’s loyalists insist the allegations are driven by motives yet to be fully revealed, hinting at broader political undercurrents behind the unfolding drama.
