In a critical appraisal of former U.S. President Donald Trump’s inaugural address, Professor Bolaji Akinyemi, a renowned political scientist and Nigeria’s former Minister of External Affairs, described it as the “worst inaugural address” he had ever heard.

Speaking on Channels Television’s Politics Today, Akinyemi expressed deep concerns over the content and tone of the speech, which he said offered little to reassure the global community.

“There was nothing there for the rest of the world,” Akinyemi remarked. “It was more of an address threatening different parts of the world.”

He criticized the speech for its overtly nationalistic rhetoric, suggesting that it signaled a shift in U.S. foreign policy towards a more insular and aggressive stance.

Akinyemi noted that such an approach could strain international relations and heighten global tensions.

He argued that the speech lacked the conciliatory and inclusive tone traditionally expected from inaugural addresses, particularly from leaders of a global superpower like the United States.

The former minister also warned that Trump’s rhetoric might embolden policies that undermine multilateralism and cooperation among nations.

He emphasized the need for countries, including Nigeria, to adopt strategies to navigate the uncertain global landscape that such rhetoric might create.
