Hon. Ikenga Imo Ugochinyere, a federal lawmaker, has raised alarm over the alleged mismanagement of funds meant for local government development in the North and South areas of his constituency.

Speaking during a visit to affected communities, Ugochinyere expressed concern that despite the huge sums allocated monthly, residents still lack basic amenities.

He said local government officials were living outside their areas, abandoning the people they were elected to serve. “Now the local government people are living in Oweri. If local governments are living in Oweri, how do the people there survive?” he asked.

The lawmaker revealed that he had personally set up an emergency fund to assist victims of terrorist attacks in communities. “Our target is to raise 50 million naira to support this family and by God’s grace before the next four five days we will cross that mark,” he stated.

According to him, some victims included children who lost their parents and others who suffered serious injuries. “Even the 5 million NRA we dispose to them is not enough–a child that is one year they shot on on the leg. The mother and the father was also killed,” he recounted.

Ugochinyere accused the local governments of failing to provide essential services despite receiving large monthly allocations. “North and south that receives 400 million plus every 30 days… they must feel the impact of that resources, it’s a must,” he said.

The lawmaker complained about the lack of clean water, electricity, and functional schools in many communities. “Our schools has collapsed… I’m on the street every day sinking water ball… doing transformers, doing schools,” he said.

On the security situation, he painted a grim picture of fear and displacement. “If they pass people run into the push,” he said, describing how residents flee when attackers approach.

He warned that the combination of insecurity, erosion, and road collapse posed an existential threat to the region. “We are in danger… at the verge of extension… we can’t sleep with two eyes are closed,” he stressed.

The lawmaker demanded accountability from local government officials. “The world must know my people receive 400 million every month but they don’t have any sign of it… and it’s gotten to a point that we can no longer take it,” he said.

He urged local government chairmen to live among their people and use public funds for public good. “You have no business living in a way… you visit like a visitor… you run away to wear your and also,” he said.
