The National Publicity Secretary of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), Ladipo Johnson, has defended the party’s national reach while emphasizing the strategic electoral importance of Kano State in Nigerian politics.
Speaking during an interview on News Central TV from 7:19, Johnson pushed back against suggestions that the NNPP and the Kwankwasiyya movement are limited to Kano State influence.
“I am not from Kano, a lot of our members who are in Oyo, Benin are not from Kano, you understand,” Johnson stated, highlighting the party’s membership diversity beyond Kano State.
The NNPP spokesman acknowledged Kano’s significance while questioning why Senator Rabiu Kwankwaso and his movement remain influential in national politics if their appeal were truly limited. “Let us even give you the benefit of the doubt and say okay it’s only popular in Kano. Why do you think Senator Kwankwaso or the Kwankwasiyya movement have been or are a recurring decimal in the political space of Nigeria, if it is only Kano?” he asked.
Johnson then revealed the electoral mathematics behind Kano’s political significance, explaining: “That is because the votes from Kano can wipe out about six, seven states and have done that in the past. The votes from Kano alone wiped out the five eastern states.”
The party official emphasized the strategic nature of Kano’s position in Nigerian politics, stating: “So you see the strategic position of Kano and the importance of it.”
Johnson concluded by addressing critics who dismiss the party’s influence, saying: “And so I keep telling people that when we say, it’s only Kano, you understand you’re not talking politically. The politicians at their desks will tell you that when that vote comes in it is a determinant factor in where Nigeria goes or in what happens.”
The comments underscore the ongoing debate about regional political influence and electoral mathematics in Nigeria’s democratic landscape.
