According to Times of Israel, on August 28, 2025, freed Israeli hostage Ilana Gritzewsky spoke emotionally to the United Nations Security Council about her traumatic 55 days in captivity under Hamas in Gaza.

She recounted moments when she was marched through Gaza streets holding a terrorist’s hand “as if I was his bride.” Upon arriving at an apartment, she said, “all of the neighbours came out to see their prize.”

Gritzewsky revealed the severe conditions she endured, spending 14 days with almost no food or water. Over her captivity, she lost 12 kilograms (around 24 pounds).

Despite suffering medical issues, “No doctor came to see me, despite my telling my captors about medical issues,” she said.

She described her captors as civilians, not in Hamas uniforms. “They told me one of them is a maths teacher, and the other one is a lawyer,” she said.

“For 50 days, they told her she could not escape and warned, “We will be hostages for five, or even 10, years.”

Her vivid testimony exposed the brutal reality of life as a hostage and the psychological torment she endured.

Gritzewsky’s story brought a personal perspective to the Security Council’s discussion on the ongoing Israel-Gaza conflict, highlighting the urgent need for action to free the remaining hostages still held by Hamas.

Her appeal to the international community underscores the human cost of the conflict and the desperate need for resolution to end the suffering of captives like her and reunite families torn apart by war.
