Former President Goodluck Jonathan recently shared a memory from his time in office, explaining why he could not implement the 2014 National Conference’s recommendations. He made these remarks during a condolence visit to the family of the late Pa Adeyanjo.

In a video that was shared by SYMFONI  TV Jonathan revealed that when he first proposed the conference, many people suspected he had a hidden agenda. However, he insisted that his goal was to find the best solutions for Nigeria through open discussions with experienced leaders from all sectors. He gave them full freedom to discuss important national issues without interference from him.

Despite the conference’s credibility and the valuable decisions made, Jonathan could not implement its outcomes due to the intense political crisis that arose towards the end of his tenure. He recalled that the Speaker of the House of Representatives, who was originally in his party, defected to another party and worked against him. This move, he said, was part of a broader effort to weaken his government.

At the time, even the Senate was unstable, making it difficult to introduce important policies. With elections approaching, Jonathan believed it was best to wait, hoping for another chance to push the conference’s decisions forward. However, he lost the 2015 election.

Reflecting on the past, Jonathan expressed hope that a future government would revisit the 2014 National Conference report and use it to improve the country.
