Hon. Obi Aguocha, Member of the House of Representatives, has criticized what he perceives as discriminatory treatment in the handling of detained separatist leader Nnamdi Kanu’s medical needs.

During an interview with Arise TV from 14:44, the legislator emphasized the principle of equal rights for all Nigerian citizens. “We are all Nigerians, regardless of our ethnic backgrounds, regardless of our cultural backgrounds,” Aguocha stated, arguing that constitutional protections should apply uniformly across the nation.

The Representative stressed that rights afforded to citizens from different regions should be universally guaranteed. “The same right that exists for a Northerner, for a Yoruba man, or for any other tribe otherwise mandated is the same right that should exist for the Igbo man. There shouldn’t be any special exceptions,” he declared.

Aguocha drew attention to what he characterized as an unusually difficult struggle to secure basic medical care for his constituent. “Look at Nnamdi Kanu, look at what we are fighting for is even to get treatment,” the lawmaker said, expressing frustration with the process.

The Representative compared Kanu’s situation to previous cases of detained individuals who were granted permission to travel abroad for medical treatment. He noted the stark contrast in how those cases were handled versus the current situation.

“There are a whole lot of people in that gap previously that were held by the state that even demanded to go overseas to get treatment for their ailments,” Aguocha observed. “But now it seems that we have to go 10 steps further—sometimes more challenges, an uphill task—to even get the government to consider giving adequate medical treatment to Nnamdi Kanu.”
