According to Iran International English, the former CENTCOM Commander, David Petraeus, during an interview, emphasized that the American Government was using the fourteen-day window to Iran to position a second aircraft carrier strike group in the Middle East, ensuring dominance before potential airstrikes on Iran’s nuclear facilities. He also warned that Iran’s threat to close the Strait of Hormuz, a vital passage for twenty percent of global oil would be neutralized by the American forces, confirming that the White House was lobbying Congress for strike authorization. He also acknowledged that a limited, precision operation (not a ground war) could gain bipartisan support.
In his words, David Petraeus said “The real reason behind the two-week window is to allow the second US aircraft carrier strike group to arrive in the region and for the US military to be fully positioned. This setup would effectively neutralize any attempt by the Iranian regime to close the Strait of Hormuz, through which nearly 20% of the world’s crude oil passes. Perhaps now is the time for Iran to embrace a strategy of national renewal. My direct message to Iran’s Supreme Leader is this: the time has come to do what your predecessors did at the end of the Iran-Iraq war to drink from the ‘poisoned chalice.’ Either you change course now, or face the destruction of your country’s security, energy infrastructure, and nuclear program.”
The former CIA Director, David Petraeus, went further to urge the Government of the Islamic Republic of Iran, under the leadership of the Supreme Leader of the Islamic Revolution, Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei, they abandon its nuclear ambitions, or risk total destruction of its infrastructure. He also compared the moment to 1988, when Khomeini ended the Iran-Iraq War despite humiliation.
