During a recent appearance on Channels Television, Segun Sowunmi, a prominent member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), recounted a surprising conversation he had with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu during a private visit. Sowunmi, who had earlier expressed reservations about some of the President’s appointments—particularly that of Central Bank Governor Yemi Cardoso—shared fresh insights into the President’s rationale.
In the interview, Sowunmi revealed that he confronted President Tinubu directly about his choice of Cardoso, questioning whether it was in the best interest of the country’s economic stability. However, he said the president’s response stunned him.
According to him, “The president gave me an example that shocked me because I told him, I said, ‘Listen, what’s this? And he said to me, Segun, do you know why I put Yemi there? Because even I cannot even give him instructions if he doesn’t agree. He gave me a good example. I won’t tell you the example, but he first told me that I told you to do this. And I said, Ah, Mr President—no. And he said, Mr Segun, I’m the president, oh.”
Sowunmi explained that Tinubu’s respect for Cardoso’s independence was what reassured him the most. He described Cardoso as a man “whose eyes are on inflation and money in circulation”, suggesting that the president deliberately appointed someone who wouldn’t bend easily to pressure. He added that he even asked Tinubu about Governor Nyesom Wike, noting that the president was open to questions that many wouldn’t dare to ask him.
