According to a report by The Nation on Tuesday, November 4, 2025, Abba Kyari, the suspended Deputy Commissioner of Police, on Tuesday appeared before the Federal High Court in Abuja, where he denied owning some of the properties linked to him by the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA).

The case is part of an ongoing trial in which Kyari is accused of failing to disclose certain assets as required by law.

He began his defence before Justice James Omotosho, where he explained that several of the properties being questioned did not belong to him.

During his testimony, Kyari told the court that some of the properties in question were owned by his late father, who had a large family with about thirty children.

He explained that the family had numerous assets in different locations, which might have been mistaken for his personal belongings.

Kyari maintained that the documents relating to those properties were not in his possession but could be found with the Ministry of Land in Borno State.

The suspended officer also dismissed claims that he owned the popular polo ground in Borno State.

He expressed surprise that such a large public space would be associated with him, insisting that the ground had existed long before he became a police officer.

Kyari recalled that the place was known for recreational activities since his childhood, where people gathered to play and watch games.

He further explained that he had no involvement in the ownership or management of the polo ground and wondered how it came to be listed among his alleged assets.

Kyari described the allegation as false and misleading, adding that those who prepared the reports linking him to the property did not verify the true ownership records.

As the first defence witness in the case, Kyari responded to questions from his lawyer, Onyechi Ikpeazu, SAN, giving details about his background and family inheritance.

He said his family had long-standing properties and lands, many of which were shared among relatives after his father’s death.

He noted that some of the assets under scrutiny could have been part of his father’s estate, which had not yet been fully distributed among the heirs.

The suspended officer maintained that he had no intention to conceal any property and had always declared what he personally owned in accordance with official requirements.

He told the court that the claims made by the NDLEA were unfounded and not supported by verified documents.

The matter continued before Justice Omotosho as Kyari’s legal team opened its defence, aiming to counter the allegations of asset non-disclosure brought against him.

The case is still ongoing as the court hears testimonies from witnesses and reviews evidence presented by both parties.
