A lawyer has given a detailed account of what recently transpired at the court located within Kuje Prison, where Human Rights Activist, Omoyele Sowore, was allegedly manhandled and taken away by some policemen in the area.
Speaking to journalists in a video covered by Symfoni TV from 1:53, he revealed that the lawyers present had appealed for Sowore’s bail, which was granted by the court on very liberal terms. He stated that while they were in the process of fulfilling Sowore’s bail conditions, a policeman confronted them, claiming he had an order to remand him.
“Sowore was allowed to remain behind because his surety was already on ground. While the surety was fulfilling the bail conditions, a policeman came around claiming that he has a remand order. Sowore was sitting on this mango tree here, the policeman claimed that he has a remand order to detain Sowore.
The lawyer said Sowore requested to see the remand order authorizing his detention, but the policeman was reluctant to openly present it for clarification.
“Sowore was like show me the order you have, he brought out a piece of paper and flashed it. Sowore said let me read it to be sure it relates to me, the policeman squeezed the paper and put it in his pocket.”
Afterward, the lawyer revealed that several other policemen arrived at the scene and forcefully took the Human Rights Activist away along with some other individuals.
“While they were still talking, the next thing, all the policemen in the environment, more than a 100 of them came into this court area, surrounded this mango tree we were all sitting. The next thing is that they grabbed Sowore by the neck, some where holding his shirt, some where holding his leg. They were rough handling him.”
