A chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Segun Showunmi, has spoken about the chances of former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, returning to the PDP ahead of the 2027 elections.
During an interview with Nigeria Info FM, Showunmi said the PDP’s recent decision to zone its presidential ticket to the South makes it the right time for Obi to return. He explained that the PDP has given opportunities to other regions of the country, but not yet to the Southeast, where Obi comes from.
“I told Peter about three months ago, it’s time to return to the PDP,” Sowunmi said. “The PDP owes the Southeast a ticket. And you, Peter, have already shown capacity. Come now.”
However, Showunmi was critical of Obi’s political style. He accused him of avoiding party primaries, which are internal elections where members of a political party choose their candidate for the main election. According to him, primaries are the true test of democracy within a party.
“The only thing there now is that Peter thinks he’s too clever. Peter never wants to do primaries,” Showunmi said. “Any politician who avoids primaries is looking for someone to cheat on his behalf.”
He also added that Obi did not manage the Labour Party well after joining it in 2022. Showunmi argued that if Obi cannot win through normal party processes, Nigerians will eventually rally around another capable leader from the Southeast.
“Good luck to Peter,” he concluded. “But Nigeria is not going to wait for Peter.”
