The Senate Spokesperson, Senator Yemi Adaramodu has clarified the nature of the court order against Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, stating that the only directives issued by the court were for her to offer an apology and pay a N5 million fine.
Speaking during an interview on Channels Television, Senator Adaramodu addressed speculations and reports surrounding the legal outcome of the case, emphasizing that no other penalties were imposed beyond the stated fine and apology.
“The only order that was made in that judgment was that our colleague, Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, should apologize to the court and pay N5 million naira fine,” Adaramodu said. “And she has appealed it.”
His comments come amid ongoing public discussions and political reactions to the court ruling, with some suggesting more severe sanctions were imposed. Adaramodu’s clarification appears aimed at cooling tensions and providing factual grounding to the narrative surrounding the case.
Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, representing Kogi Central, had been involved in a legal dispute that garnered national attention. The court’s ruling, now under appeal, focused on comments she reportedly made which were deemed contemptuous.
The spokesperson’s statement is seen as an attempt by the Senate leadership to maintain institutional decorum while respecting both the judicial process and Senator Natasha’s right to appeal the decision.
Observers say the case highlights the delicate balance between freedom of expression and respect for legal institutions in Nigeria’s democratic framework. As the appeal proceeds, both legal and political stakeholders will be watching closely for its implications on legislative conduct and accountability.
