Former Chairman of the Inter-Party Advisory Council (IPAC), Peter Ameh, has called on political coalitions to rally behind former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, for the 2027 elections. Ameh argued that Obi’s electoral track record and agreement to serve only one term make him the most viable candidate for the coalition to defeat the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

Speaking on News Central TV on Monday from 21:05, August 11, 2025, Ameh stressed the importance of strategic alliances and political reality in Nigeria’s electoral landscape:

“I’m a northerner, you know, I’m a northerner, I’m from that process, the coalition will lose, because you need somebody, yes, if you are taking somebody from the south, you need somebody for, since 1999 to 2023, none of the time that PDP has ever defeated Bola Ahmed Tinubu in Lagos, it was Peter Obi that did that, in the same thing, as standing on a political party, they have no governors, nobody, also defeated the APC with the structure in the FCT, and then won 44.5% in the south.”

Highlighting Obi’s agreement to serve only one term, Ameh continued:

“The only obstacle that would stand before the coalition today, is that if Peter Obi had not agreed to do a one-term, a one-time for four years, since he had agreed, and he has a better chance, and better understanding with the electorate in the south, they should be able to support him, to be able to come on board, finish in one time, and return back to the north. So for me, I don’t think that anybody should be, all of them should be part of the process, they should support him.”

Ameh referenced the political loyalty shown by Obi in past elections:

“Look at Goodluck Jonathan, look at how much the president, Peter Obi, invested his time in 2011 and 2015, to stand, because he knows that you need to stand behind somebody that will do the… and at the time, you can see Amaechi even making mockery of his support for Goodluck Jonathan, of how much the southeast even stood for Goodluck Jonathan, of how much they did everything, even despite Goodluck is not from the same zone.”

He urged political stakeholders to recognise the South-East’s past contributions and to support Obi as a matter of fairness and strategic advantage:

“This is a time to be able to look at this whole record, and see what the southeast has contributed to the PDP, what the southeast has contributed to the campaign of Goodluck Jonathan, and all of them, and then say, no, this is time to pay them back. And there’s one thing that I used to tell people, as much as Peter Obi is saying that I’m not a regional candidate, I’m not this, I want to be known to somebody who ran for the presidency based on competence, merit, and ability, these facts are still our reality, we must live by the reality of our country, and then try to define the political process in the way that accommodates our interests.”
