In a recent interview with TVC News, Senator Yusuf Abubakar Yusuf, who represented Taraba Central in the Nigerian Senate from 2015 to 2023, shared his insights on President Bola Tinubu’s economic reforms and their impact on Nigerians.

He emphasized the distinction between economic and political reforms, acknowledging the significant steps taken economically, such as the removal of the fuel subsidy and the floating of the naira. These measures, he noted, have profound social implications that are currently being felt across the nation.

Despite these economic strides, Senator Yusuf pointed out that corresponding political reforms have yet to materialize.

He highlighted the importance of political parties convening national economic council meetings to address challenges and chart a path forward. These councils serve as the highest decision-making bodies within each party, providing a platform for comprehensive discussions on the nation’s direction.

In his words: “”That is why I said I decided to distinguish between political and economic reforms. Yes, there have been some economic reforms—no doubt about it. For example, the removal of the fuel subsidy and the floating of the naira. These are significant steps with far-reaching social implications for the country, and we are all feeling the impact of these changes.”

“However, have these economic reforms translated into political reforms? Not yet. We are still waiting to see. That is why I emphasized that political parties ought to have held national economic council meetings. These are the highest decision-making bodies within each political party, and they provide a platform to address challenges and decide on the way forward.”

Addressing concerns about regional support, particularly from the North, Senator Yusuf dismissed the notion that the North would undermine President Tinubu after supporting his ascent to power.

He said: “The North cannot bring Tinubu to power only to destroy him. That is not the case. What the North is saying is this: ‘We brought you to power. Recognize the benefits of that support.’ Nobody is against appointing credible people—there’s no doubt about that. However, there are historical agreements and understandings that must be respected
