Prof. ABC Nwosu, who once served as health minister during President Olusegun Obasanjo’s administration, was reportedly the winner of the PDP governorship primary in Anambra State back in 1998 but was later disqualified by an appeal panel.
In an exclusive interview with Vanguard News in Abuja, Prof. Nwosu, who also held the position of Special Adviser on Political Matters to President Obasanjo before becoming a minister, voiced confidence that the PDP still has a chance to recover—if it adheres to its internal rules.
Reflecting on the crisis within the opposition party, he recalled, “The issues facing the party today actually began as far back as 1998 when I secured the PDP governorship ticket in Anambra, only for it to be withdrawn by the appeal panel.”
He made it clear that he is no longer involved in partisan politics. “I resigned from the PDP on the grounds of principle and conscience, and I made that decision public. So I’m out of active politics now. All I advocate for is a fair and open process where the people are free to elect whoever they prefer as governor. That’s the most straightforward stance I can take, based on my personal experience.”
He emphasized that if the people choose a candidate, their decision should be respected. “They have their reasons. You’re asking who I think should lead or what my view is,” he continued.
He said, “The most stable time we’ve had in Anambra has been under Peter Obi, and I think what has helped a lot under Peter Obi was his humility.”
He added that, real or not, the perception of humility matters. “People generally dislike leaders who act like they already know every problem before hearing from the people. They want someone who listens, understands, and helps guide them toward solutions calmly. That’s just basic human nature.”
