During an interview with Channels Television, prominent Nigerian lawyer and human rights advocate Mike Ozekhome shared the chilling details of his past kidnapping experience. He recounted how the incident unfolded, the deadly consequences for security officers involved, and the surprising remorse later shown by the kidnappers once they discovered his identity.
Ozekhome explained that the ordeal was not only terrifying but also tragic, as policemen who attempted to rescue him were killed in his presence. He noted that the abductors had no idea who he was at the time of the attack. It was only days later, after his identity became public, that the tone of the captors shifted completely, showing an unusual sense of regret.
According to him, “The full policemen that were coming to my aid were brutally gunned down in my presence. And the kidnappers made it clear that they didn’t profile me; they didn’t know who I was. It was about two days later when the news filtered that they knew. And they came to me and said, Sorry, sir, we didn’t know it was you we kidnapped. Had we known, we would have gone to drop you back because you have been fighting for the common man, including us. It was so touching.”
