According to a report by Punch on Friday, October 31, 2025, a former Deputy National Chairman (South) of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Chief Bode George, has faulted the judgment of the Federal High Court, Abuja, which restrained the party from holding its national convention slated for November 15 and 16 in Ibadan.

Justice James Omotosho had issued the order following a suit claiming that the PDP breached constitutional and procedural guidelines in organising its congresses and preparing for the convention. The ruling stated that the party failed to conduct valid state congresses before planning to elect new national officers.

George, in a statement on Friday, criticised the decision, describing it as unnecessary judicial interference in internal party administration. “INEC is not complaining. The judge did not invite INEC officials. So why is he complaining? Does he have a political interest?” he asked.

According to him, the Independent National Electoral Commission, which supervised all PDP congresses nationwide, did not raise objections or report irregularities. He therefore questioned the court’s justification for intervening in a process that had not attracted official protest.

George said the judgment reflected a worrying trend where courts appear to be delving into the internal structures of political parties, warning that such actions could undermine democracy.

He urged the Chief Justice of Nigeria and the National Judicial Council to caution judges against politically charged rulings that might erode the credibility of the judiciary.

He further noted that the PDP has maintained a tradition of compliance with due process since its formation in 1998, adding that disputes should be resolved through the party’s internal mechanisms.

George called on PDP members nationwide to remain united and peaceful as the leadership explores legal remedies to overturn the ruling.

He stressed that the independence of political parties is critical to Nigeria’s democratic growth, warning that judicial overreach could set a damaging precedent for future political contests. View, More,
