According to Punch, fear and anguish have returned to Mgbuji in Eha-Amufu, Enugu State, after suspected Fulani herdsmen launched a fresh attack on Monday, killing four farmers and leaving several others injured. The bloodshed marks yet another episode in what residents describe as a prolonged and one-sided war in their community.

The victims, including three adults and a young man identified as Izuchukwu Uzu, were reportedly ambushed while tending to their farms. Graphic images and videos obtained by sources show bodies being recovered from the farmland — a hauntingly familiar scene for the people of Isi-Uzo Local Government Area.

Despite the recurring nature of these assaults, neither the Enugu State government nor the police has publicly acknowledged this latest tragedy as of Wednesday. Community members say the response, as usual, came only after the dead had to be collected — not before the attackers struck.

They said; “The government only mobilises security agents after every attack to collect corpses, but they don’t do anything to prevent the attacks or engage the assailants.”

Community leader Samuel Ede expressed exhaustion and heartbreak over the situation. He accused the government of merely reacting to attacks instead of taking proactive steps to stop them. According to him, the authorities routinely deploy security agents only to recover corpses, not to deter or confront the attackers. “What’s the use of security forces if they can’t stop people from being slaughtered in their own farms?” he asked bitterly.

Another resident, Okibe Ogenyi, confirmed the toll: three bodies were recovered shortly after the attack, while the fourth — Izuchukwu’s — was found on Tuesday. He described the constant fear the community lives with, likening the crisis to a guerrilla war. “You can never predict when they’ll strike. When you think one part is secure, they come from another angle,” he said.

The people of Mgbuji have long warned of the deteriorating security situation in their farmlands, with many abandoning their agricultural activities entirely for fear of being attacked. As farming becomes more dangerous and food insecurity rises, the silence from official quarters continues to deepen the sense of abandonment.

For now, the grieving families bury their dead with no clear answers, as a cycle of death and silence plays out once again in Eha-Amufu.
